With the warmer weather in recent days we can expect to see migratory birds making their way back to Mound soon. The students are reading Flute's Journey (except for GATE Reading). Students began reading today in class and should read it again tonight. We will discuss the book and take the AR test tomorrow.
In math, today we began studying decimals. Nothing new really. Students have been working with decimals ever since they began to learn about money. Today's lesson was about adding and subtracting decimals. The most important thing is to line up place values, read the operation (+ or -) and write the decimal in the answer. By the end of the week students should feel comfortable adding/subtracting decimals with varying numbers after the decimal (ex- 1.34 + 2.1 or 3.4 - 2.212)
In social studies we are concluding our studies of the Midwest. This week we have been studying how farming has changed over the last two hundred years (the number of farmers, size of farms, farm tools, etc.) Students also role played an auction. We discussed why farmers sell out and what effect that has on the rural economy. I've been to lot of farm auctions. As a kid on my family's dairy farm, going to an auction is often how we spent a rainy Saturday. Click below to view a couple of documentaries on farm auctions that we viewed in class today.
